Spiel is a UK based soccer publication. They wanted to redesign their existing platform in order to create a special one off edition.
We created a series of parallels between page layout and soccer to make a dynamic layout that is both referred to and informed by its content.
Profile pages on icons like Zidane and Inzaghi used hand drawn type to refer to a fans home made banners, with the paragraphs allowed to sit up, down and across the page - reminiscent of the running patterns of the players. All pages used the custom 'subs board' font for page numbers - a normally unobtrusive element given pride of place on each page.
The issue also featured the work of illustrators Malika Favre, Jean Julien and Rob Lowe (Supermundane).
Spiel was printed on a 4 colour riso, with a hot foiled and offset cover.
